Bookish on McGraw-Hill

Client Case Study: McGraw-Hill Education

In early September 2015, aka “back-to-school” time of year, our creative director received an out-of-the-blue request from an old publishing colleague requesting urgent assistance with book designs!

It was a high-level manager at McGraw-Hill Education, who explained that — due to sudden, calamitous budget-shrinkage related to the ongoing devolution, evolution, reimagining, and metamorphosis of the book publishing industry — they had to shut down a creative division and let all the people go. Sadly, this included on-staff designers, without whom MGHE still needed to get books designed and sold…

So they asked our creative director, whose personal motto (which we have borrowed permanently) is, “Tell me where you want to go and I’ll take you there” for urgent assistance and she said, “Yes!”

This launched a three-year project for us, which consisted of managing a group of freelance/contract designers acting as MGHE’s “in-house” team to deliver high-volume — between 300-500 per year — book (and related materials) designs on demand.

The project with MGHE was sometimes fun, usually profitable, and always stressful, being managed almost entirely remotely through web meetings. It wound down and ended amicably, as MGHE moved into the next phase of their corporate restructuring and workflow evolution.

Tell us where you want to go and we’ll take you there!
